Assignment -

To perform a two-sample Hest:

Analyze->Compare Means-> Independent samples t-test

Select a test variable (the mean to be tested)

Select a grouping variable (the categories to be compared)

Define the groups. Enter a value for Group 1: and Group 2:

1. Union households and attitudes about illegal immigrants.

For each of the exercises we are using a feeling thermometer - the variable is scaled so that 0=intense dislike, 50=neutral, and 100= like very much. Each respondent is asked to give a number on the 0-100 scale for a variety of symbols, groups and particular people. All of the feeling thermometers start with the letters ft. ft_ILLEGAL_IMMIGRANTS records your feelings about illegal immigrants. This is the "test variable" for this question.

Do you think there will be a link between whether or not you live in a union household and your feelings about illegal immigrants? How or why?

What is the name of the variable that reports whether or not you live in a union household? (This is the grouping variable).

What are the numbers - the values of the variable - associated with union (____) and not union (____). (These will be the numbers for Group 1 and Group 2) [Right click the variable name from any menu, select variable information, and click the down arrow in the information box to see the numbers associated with each category.)

Perform the independent samples Hest using the commands above.

What is the mean of the feeling thermometer for union households______ and non union households______?

Is this consistent with your expectations?

What is the value of the t-test? Is this statistically significant?

What does the t-test tell you about link between living in a union household and attitudes toward illegal immigrants in the population? (Use the significance level).

2. Are there racial differences in feelings toward conservatives?

What is the variable name that designates race? What are the racial categories and what numbers are associated with each category?

Generate a two-sample t-test to compare the mean of the feeling thermometer for conservatives (ft_CONSERVATIVES) for white and minority respondents. (Hint: experiment with the "Cut-point" rather than specifying Group numbers. Cut-point divides the sample into 2 groups- Group 2 includes anyone greater than or equal to the cut-point. Group 1 includes anyone below the cut-point.)

What does the output tell you about the sample? (Use the sample means here).

What is the value of the t-test? Is this statistically significant? What does the output tell you about the population? (Use the t-test and significance level here).

3. Pick any feeling thermometer from the list (any variable that starts with "ft").

Pick any one of the demographic characteristics and produce a t-test that compares two groups. You could compare men and women, white and minority, veteran and non-veteran, union and non-union, married or not, attends church never vs does - don't use scales like age, income, party id or education for the grouping variable.
