Data Analysis Assignment -
American League Salaries for the 2018 Season
The individual salaries (in terms of millions of dollars) that were paid to Major League Baseball players in the American League (AL) during the 2018 season is provided in the SPSS file: AL18DatA. The individual salaries are listed by team and include the bonuses, if any, that were paid to each of the players. The SPSS data file also includes the position (SP=Starting pitcher, RP=Relief pitcher, C=Catcher, INF=Infielder, OF=Outfielder or DH=Designated hitter) and the age of each player.
Assignment: Suppose you have been hired by the Boston Globe to write a feature article on players' salaries within the American League by answering the questions below. Due to space limitations, at most seven pages can be used. Your article should include any relevant tables, charts, graphs etc. that you may wish to prepare. These tables, charts and graphs should be incorporated directly into the article. Do not place them in an Exhibit or Appendix section as might be done if you were writing a research report. You should be writing this article for your readers who are not all that familiar with statistical terminology. Thus, the statistics and exhibits that you use should be explained to your readers. Also do not answer each question separately as in a homework assignment, but rather write an article for a newspaper or a magazine.
1. What is the "typical salary" paid to players within the American League? [Alternatively, if after analyzing the data, you conclude that there is not a typical salary, you should indicate the specific reasons why you came to this conclusion.]
2. A salary above what amount would be considered to be an extreme outlier salary for the league as a whole? How many players in the league have a salary above this amount?
3. Consider each individual team and identify those players on each team that have extreme outlier salaries compared to other players on the team.
4. Is there a large difference between teams with respect to the average salary that they pay to their players or do they all pay just about the same average salary? Give details.
5. Which teams have the greatest and least amount of variability in terms of the salaries that they pay to their players? Give details.
6. Is there a strong, weak or no relationship between the average salary paid by a team to its players and how well the team did during the season? If you conclude there is a relationship, is it a positive or a negative relationship? Give details.
7. Compare the salary distributions of relief pitchers (RP) and starting pitchers (SP). Would you say they are similar or dissimilar?
8. Discuss the age distribution of players in the AL and also present a graph of this distribution.
Save all of your output in a SPSS output file and e-mail the file to me when you submit your article.
1. The typical salary of the American League baseball players os $4.599 Million (Mean). It is the average. Show histogram.
In all fields and professions, there are variations in salaries. The salaries of the Major League Baseball Players are no exception to this. The 'average' salary is not as simple as it seams, and can be interpreted in different ways. Even though the Mean is usually associated as being the "average number", this is not always entirely correct. Most data sets have extreme otliers, so choosing the mean as the typical salary would be misleading. The median, 1.75 million, would be more representative of the typical salary because it is a middle ground for all the salaries. Half of the player earne less and the other half of the player earn more.
