In 1999, two academics made a bold and controversial claim. John Donohue of Stanford University Law School and Steven Levitt of the University of Chicago (who would go on to write Freakonomics) presented evidence suggesting that much of the sharp drop in crime in the United States during the 1990s was caused by the legalization of abortion twenty years earlier as the result of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Donohue and Levitt argued that crime fell sharply in the 1990s because many would-be criminals were never born; they were aborted instead. Their original study on the subject argued that "legalized abortion appears to account for as much as 50 percent of the recent drop in crime."
