ASSESSMENT TASK 2
There are two (2) activities to this task:
• Activity 1: you are required to demonstrate knowledge of factors to be considered when rostering staff.
• Activity 2: you are required to demonstrate your ability to consult with colleagues and seek input into the development of rosters.
Read the case study background information below and provide written answers to the questions that follow.
Case Study Background Information
Amy is the owner-manager of The Best Bite Café, with employees engaged under the Hospitality Industry (General) Award) 2010.
The business trades 7 days/week, opening at 8am each day and closing at 11pm preparing and serving food for in-house and take-away consumption as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption only.
She has identified a need to reconsider her current rostering arrangements as her workplace observations and feedback from several staff have indicated the potential for there to be several staff - and roster-related issues unless she takes action.
Being an ardent supporter of workplace equality Amy has employed a rich mix of people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds as well as equal numbers of males and females.
She wants to do more to promote workplace equality and is also intent on doing more to meet the preferences of her staff regarding rostering and work arrangements but wants to ensure no employees feel unfairly treated as a consequence

QUESTION 3 Amy's average weekly revenue is $38,500 and she has decided she wants to run a labour cost percentage of 17%: on these figures, how much does she have available to pay her labour costs?
QUESTION 4 Currently there is a very bad flu epidemic in the community and Janine determines she needs to work out how she might address future situations where staff are absent due to illness. List below two (2) options she has in this regard?

Participate in Staff Rostering Meeting (Roleplay)

Amy, the owner-manager of The Best Bite Café, is faced with the following staffing issues/ requests.
Layla
Layla feels that it is unfair that she is always rostered on the late night shift. She has two (2) small children and would prefer to work on a rotating roster which would allow her to be home earlier several days a week.
Sam
Another employee, Sam was employed to work weekends, however now that the number of staff has grown, he would like to work alternating Sundays, to allow him to spend quality time with his family on alternate weekends.
Shannon
A new employee, Shannon, is an orthodox Jew and cannot work between Friday and Saturday nights, as they observe the Sabbath (holy day).
Amy has decided to hold a staff meeting to discuss the rostering concerns of all employees and seek their input into improving the current rostering system and to meet employees' needs whilst ensuring workplace equality.
You are required to conduct a meeting, playing the role of Amy.
Your assessor will organise three (3) other students to play the roles of Layla, Sam & Shannon. Your assessor will observe you throughout the meeting as you listen, understand and respond to the issues raised.
Note: You may be required to participate in roleplays for other students
During the meeting the student (Amy) must:
1) Ask questions to confirm employee requirements
2) Use active listening skills
3) Understand and interpret what is being said
4) Agree on a solution with accommodates all the social and cultural considerations.
