Over a period of time a car engine burns 0.01kg of fuel (equivalent to supply of QH from a high temperature reservoir) at a temperature of 1550K and rejects waste energy to the radiator and the exhaust at an average temperature of 700K. (equivalent to reject of heat, QL to a low temperature reservoir). The fuel has a specific energy content of44000 kJ/kg , assuming complete combustion.

a) What is the total energy released by burning the mass of the fuel (QH)?

b) What is the maximum amount of work the engine can deliver (i.e. the energy output working at the Carnot efficiency)?

c) If the engine has a more realistic efficiency of say 30%, what would be the actual work output of the engine?

A heat engine design is proposed which would receive 325KJ from an energy reservoir at a temperature of 1000K. The engine would reject 125kJ of energy to a reservoir at a temperature of 400K and the power cycle would produce output of 200kJ.

What is the proposed engine and it's thermodynamic cycle.

A. Impossible

B. Reversible

C. Irreversible

A mass of 1.5kg of O2 is heated from 22oC to 60oC at constant pressure.

a) What is the change in enthalpy of the mass?

b) What is the value of the specific heat at constant volume, CvO2?

c) What is the change in internal energy of the mass?

Specific heat for O2, assuming constant value: CpO2 = 922 J/ kg K

Gas constant for O2: RO2 = 297 J/kg K
