Assignment
Step I: For this first practice summary blog, work on development of a summary of Addison "Two Years Are Better Than Four" essay.
Remember the following about Summary:
A. The first sentence of the summary should contain the author's name, title of the work, and the thesis [overall argument] in the work.
B. The following sentences should each be a main supporting point made by the author.
C. The supporting points should not include names, numbers (statistics), or any specific examples from the work.
D. No responses or use of 1st person "I" or 2nd person "you" should appear in the summary.
E. Use consistent attribution to the author for each point shared (ie "According to the author..."; "The author contends...")
Step II: Develop a claim in response to the essay. Do you agree, disagree, or agree with a difference to the essay you summarized? Now is time for the "And Yet..." portion of the assignment [see pages 68-77]. Focus on the templates provided for bringing in your own point of view following the summation of the opposite viewpoint.
Step III: In a third paragraph within this blog entry, I would like for you to answer the following questions on your summary this week to further analyze it.
Blog Two: Questions for Analysis:
A. How does the author of the essay attempt to use persuasion in his essay?
B. How does he/she appeal to the audience?
C. Is the overriding argument for each essay more logical or more emotional? Explain.
D. What is the tone utilized in each essay? Is it straightforward and to-the-point? Is there an urgent tone? Or is the tone emotional?
E. Are the arguments implied or stated outright?
F. How does each essay define the issue?
G. What kinds of examples or testimony {sources} are used to support the arguments?
