A turbofan jet engine has a large fan that sucks in air. Some of this air enters a set of compressors, is mixed with fuel in combustion chambers, and expands through the turbines that drive the fan. However, most of the air is accelerated by the fan through a bypass and exits together with the hot combustion exhaust.
In one type of engine, the ratio of the mass flow rate through the bypass is 2.5 times that through the combustion path. An aircraft fitted with this engine is in steady flight at 300 m/s. Air enters the jet engine at a rate of 300 kg/s. Bypass air exits at 600 m/s while combustion air exits at 1000 m/s. What is the thrust in kN of this engine?
Determine the resulting change
One kilogram of air as an ideal gas executes a Carnot power cycle having a thermal efficiency 50%. The heat transfer to the air during isothermal expansion is 50 kJ. At the end of the isothermal expansion, the pressure is 574 kPa and the volume is..
Calculate the power required to overcome the skin friction drag on the keel of a sailing dingy moving through water at 2m/s. The keel projects 0.8m into the water and it is 0.4m wide
Select the proper heat exchanger from American Industrial Heat Transfer Inc. company. Check whether the pressure drop on the shell side is within allowable pressure drop of 20 psi.
Draw the T-s diagram (hint: it would help to begin with a schematic of the cycle) and.
The system on site is a pressure sand filter, with a service curve. The filter is backwashed using the feed pump, at a higher flow rate, shown as backwash curve. What is the speed of the pump to achieve the service and backwash flow rates ?

calculate the transverse modulus of the peek/carbon fiber composite with 30% volume fraction by tow method. the modulus of peek is 3.8 GPa and the modulus of the carbon fiber is 400GPa. assume the reinforcing factor.
Assuming that the air is 80°F and 1 atm and blows across the wall as on a flat plate, estimate the average temperature the wall will attain for equilibrium conditions.
Tensile force formulas, A cylindrical steel beam is 2 inches diameter and 6 feet long. The modulus of elasticity is 30 x 1,000,000 psi. If the beam is subjected to a tensile force of 1000 lbs, what will be the resulting unit strain?
