Emissions of sulphur dioxide by industry set off chemical changes in the atmosphere that result in acid rhin. The acidity of liquids is measured by pH on a scale from 0 to 14. Distilled water has pH of 7.0 and lower pH values indicate acidity. Theory suggests that the pH of rain varies among rainy days according to a normal distribution with mean 5.4 and standard deviation 0.8.

Besides the sample standard deviation 0.5, the same random sample of rain water of 21 days also shows a sample mean of 5.0. You would like to test if the population mean pH of rain water is indeed equal to 5.4 as the theory suggests. At a=0.10, what is the test statistic and what are the critical values?

  • Test statistic: -1.725. Critical values: -3.667 and 3.667.
  • Test statistic: -3.667. Critical values: -1.725 and 1.725.
  • Test statistic: -3.667. Critical values: -2.576 and 2.576.
  • Test statistic: -16.800. Critical values: -1.721 and 1.721.
