Case: A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of text message reminders in increasing the influenza vaccination. Six weeks after seasonal influenza vaccinations began, high-risk patients who had a mobile telephone number on record at 10 practices in Western Australia were identified. Of the 12,354 eligible patients, one-half were randomly assigned to receive a vaccination reminder by text and the rest received no text. Approximately 3 months after the text was sent, vaccination data were extracted from the patients' electronic medical records.
