In a (foolish) attempt to evaluate the spike recovery of a method for free SO2 analysis, 8.3 mg potassium metabisulfite (K2S2O5, molar mass 222.31 g/mol) is added to a 100 mL wine sample.

K2S2O5 + H2O=>2KOH+2SO2

a. What is the spike level of SO2 (mg/L)?

b. The spiked sample is found to have 20.3 mg/L free SO2 while the same wine just prior to spiking was found to have 4.4 mg/L free SO2. What is the spike recovery (%)?

c. Low spike recoveries may have nothing to do with the analytical method itself, but rather the analyte and the sample matrix. What are some reasons for low recovery of free SO2? (This is why a quantitative assessment of the accuracy of SO2 analysis is virtually impossible.)
