1) Near room temperature, the specific heat capacity of benzene is 1.15 .

a) Calculate the heat required to raise the temperature of 1545 mL of benzene from 9 oC to 55 oC. The density of liquid benzene is 0.78 .

b) 25.0 g of benzene is placed in a bomb calorimeter and pressurized with excess oxygen gas. The bomb calorimeter is placed in an insulated container containing 1000 g of water at 298 K and the benzene is combusted. If the molar heat of combustion of benzene is 399.7 kJ/mol, and assuming the calorimeter absorbs negligible heat, determine the final temperature of the water after the system has reached thermal equilibrium.

2) A piece of metal of mass 34.72 g at 99.7 oC is placed in an insulated container that contains 64.27 grams of water at 22.0 oC. The final temperature of the water is 25.7 oC. What is the specific heat capacity of the metal?

3) Ice is a very important commodity in the VI, especially when trying to keep certain libations cold and frosty. How many kJ of energy is required to freeze 220 kg of water and then cool the ice to -25 oC. The enthalpy of fusion for ice is 6.007 kJ/mol, the heat capacity of water is 4.184 J/(g.K) and the heat capacity of ice is 2.11 J/(g.K).
