Suppose 60,000 women were screened for breast cancer for the first time. Of these, 10,000 women had a positive result on a mammogram. Among those who tested positive, 1200 had a biopsy indicating a diagnosis of breast cancer. Of the remaining women screening negative, 500 developed breast cancer within the following year and were assumed to have been false-negative when they were tested with the mammogram earlier.
