The prevalence of personal and family preparedness in the United States is historically quite low. This impacts both the public and responders during a disaster-- people who are underprepared are more likely to need the support from emergency services during a disaster, and responders who are underprepared are less likely to be able to report for duty and perform their essential jobs because they''ll be tendig to their family's needs first.
Officials and non-governmental agencies have been trying to increase the amount of people who take disaster and emegency preparedness seriously and who take even minimal steps to plan for how they will meet their needs for food, water, shelter, reunification, medications, etc. during a crisis. Most have them have resulted in almost no movement towards greater preparedness in the U.S.
For this homework, write an essay in which you propose three possible ways to address this problem of low preparedness. Maybe you can figure out how to improve the situation where nobody else has!
In 6 pages or less (minus title and references), please:
A. Provide an analysis of the "prevalence of preparedness" in the U.S. What is the scope of the problem in terms of the numbers? What do you think the barriers are to more people becoming more prepared for disasters?
B. Offer your thoughts on whether this issue is important enough that the government and other stakeholders should try to improve the amount of prepared individuals and families in the U.S.?
C. Offer at least three suggestions on how to get more individuals more prepared than they are. If there is any evidence that your ideas have been tried before, be sure to include it.
