Choose one contemporary state that is described by political science scholars as communist, one that is described as fascist, and one that is described as religious fundamentalist from the following lists: Communist, Religious, AND FASCIST
Communist: China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos
Religious Fundamentalist (Theocracy): Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Vatican City, Yemen
Fascist: Italy (1922-1943), apartheid South Africa (1958-1992), Imperial Japan, Spain (1939-1975), Hungary under Orban (2010-present), India under Modi (2014-present)
Based on information from Polity Freedom House and/or Regimes of the World answer the following questions about each regime:
1. What kind of regime is it?
Identify the source and classification scheme you are using
Explain what the classification means: Who has political power? How are those who have political power selected? How is political power limited? What recourse do citizens have to resist political power when they do not like how it is being used?
2. Who is a citizen of the state?
What entitles a person to citizenship (e.g. birth, parentage, race/ethnicity/religion)?
3. What is the scope of political power in people's lives? (e.g. What can the state require people to do? What does the state do for people?)
How is the scope of power explained? (e.g. what values or goals are entrusted to the state that require it to have this kind of power or prevent it from having power?)
4. What is the role of the government in the economy? How is it justified?
5. Choose one policy implemented by this regime and explain how it is justified in relation to the core values of the ideology and the overall vision of the world the ideology pursues.
6. How well does the ideology align with the real use of power within the state?
