Question: What is the role of revolution in your life? How has your personal understanding of revolution changed over time - especially over this semester? Did your understanding about revolution change by deepening your sense of what revolution really means to you as a person? Did your understanding about revolution change by broadening what revolution applies to in your personal world? Perhaps your understanding of revolution has been stretched and you have yet to decide for yourself what you think about the subject -- except that it will take time to mature in your mind. Take some time to think about these questions and to form some ideas about what relevance and what urgency principles of revolution have in your life as you come to the close of this semester. Feel free to journal some notes as you review your reading and writing experiences this semester. Your goal is to come up with an idea about what revolution has come to mean to you. You might want to express this idea chronologically - starting with the beginning of the semester and concluding with our final weeks, or you might want to express this idea thematically -- chosing one or more themes that will tell your story. Your journal should not focus merely on your most recent experience reading and writing about revolution in Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail, but should also consider the different expressions of revolution we have read about and written about in class - starting with the experience of injustice in George Orwell's Shooting an Elephant and the transformative role of self-education in Malcolm X's Learning to Read to the effect of expectation in how we experience events we anticipate in Audre Lorde's Fourth of July, to the psychology behind why we don't complain in William F. Buckley Jr.'s Why Don't We Complain? to what it means to use our voice to lift up ourselves and inspire others, even when we're oppressed or under the control of the power structure, in Maya Angelou's Graduation.
