Practical Activity - Case Study

Instructions to the Students:

This is a comprehensive assessment and using multi-dimensional approach of underpinning learners' knowledge and skills through variety of tools, e.g. Case study, short answer questions and situational analysis.

For this task you are to complete the following tasks to plan and manage the materials supply for an engineering project or for a manufacturing operation.

Student needs to attempt in the following two case studies and answer the questions given after each case study and save as a portfolio provided in the assessment:

Case Study 1(attached):

Student must answer the following questions (Student is advised to conduct further research on the company and its policy on material sourcing and planning):

The report on the given case study is prepared by a Graduate Student. What do you understand by a 'centralised manufacturing structure'?

In your opinion, did Electrolux use a centralised manufacturing process? Justify with appropriate arguments. Has it been analysed properly?

How could you have explained it differently, please explain with appropriate supporting evidences. (500 words).

Research Electrolux website and gather the information about their approach towards product demand forecasting. (150 words).

Please explain methodology used in the case. Can we apply any other methodology to analyse the core issue? Explain the risk management structure in use at Electrolux (250 words).

Prepare the organisational chart for this organisation, clearly showing reporting lines along with a communication clearly reflecting the role and importance of all the stakeholders. (Student is advised to research the internet for the relevant templates or else can refer the one given at the end to do this activity). (250 words).

What is 5S Methodology? Explain (100 words).

Referring the outcomes and findings, comment upon whether the further cost reductions can be achieved using any other approach other than 5S (which is a lean sigma approach). (Student must research some other approaches that may be more effective than 5S both in terms of quality and risk minimisation). (400 words).

Comments on Electrolux's work place safety standards. (250 words).

Research and comments on Electrolux purchasing and production policy. (250 words).

Research and explain the contingency policy of Electrolux (250 words).

Research and explain the performance management system used by Electrolux group. Also, in short, explain Electrolux's continuous improvement policy. What software applications and Resource planning methods they adopt (250 words).

What is the role of National Environmental Agency, Singapore? Explain Singapore's current policy on Waste management.

Explain the role of 3Rs. Despite one of the most densely populated country in the world, how Singapore is managing its waste?
