1. The "blues" have greatly influenced American music in virtually every genre. Describe that influence, citing major works, performers, or composers, and how that influence continues to the present day.

2. We have listened to several works in class that have significantly addressed the social-cultural-political events and trends of the time. Why are the arts, and music in particular, so important in discussing these often controversial issues? What is the role of music in American society as a voice for social change?

3. Funding for the arts, and especially for music, in American public school systems has been on a decline for many years. This is a trend not seen in most countries in the developed world. In your opinion, how has that decline of funding affected the average American student's education?

4. In this class, we have listened to music written and/or performed by several often-underrepresented communities (African-Americans, Jewish, women, LGBTQ+, Hispanic Americans, etc.). Choose one such community and trace their influence through the history of American music up to and including the present day. Cite important figures and works.
