Community-Based Participatory Research

What is the role of CBPR and how can it improve health?

Traditionally, community members were not involved in planning health interventions or designing research projects. Community members would offer their time to participate in studies without compensation. When a project ended, community members would not receive information about the outcomes of the study. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) offers a different approach. Community members serve as partners, rather than subjects, and are active participants in the planning and development of interventions and/or research projects. Through an equitable partnership with academia and researchers, community members serve as experts throughout various phases of the research process, contributing their knowledge about health problems in the community and effective interventions to improve health outcomes. Additionally, community members can also assist researchers in informing the community about the purpose of the research and intended outcomes to secure trust, communication, and community participation.

For this Discussion, refer to page 277 of your text and review the table of principles for CBPR. Consider how CBPR may contribute to positive health outcomes in populations. Consider a community of interest and reflect on how CBPR may apply to this community.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start engaging in a discussion with your colleagues. You must respond to at least one of your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a Discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your colleagues are responding, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from colleagues. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources you used so that your colleagues can read them for themselves. See your Discussion rubric in the Course Information tab for specific grading requirements.

Post by Day 3 a description of a specific health issue in a select community of interest. Identify one principle of CBPR that can be applied to the community you selected and explain how this principle can inform interventions to alleviate health disparities for your community. Be specific and provide examples.

Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion no later than Day 5 and continue engaging through Day 7. Continue the Discussionby Day 5 and describe how an alternative CBPR principle could also address a healthy disparity for the community of interest your colleague selected.

Support your work with specific citations from this week's Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to the Essential Guide to APA Style for Walden Students to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct.
