Discussion Post: Geographic Information Systems
In earlier eras, the environment was the primary cause of ill-health, and early forms public health addressed the environment. As medicine evolved, it strayed from a focus on the environment's influence on health. But in modern times there is a better understanding of how surroundings can impact illness, and with the help of new technologies and ideas from other fields, public health professionals are gaining more insight into how disease spreads through certain regions. Among these sources of insight and technologies are spatial analysis and geographic information systems (GIS).
