Symbolism in The Circle
Answer TWO of the following questions in two separate paragraphs. As much as possible, use quotes from The Circle to support your answers.
1. What is the difference between the TruYou of The Circle and the true you in real life? What do you think Eggers is saying about what has changed about us and our values? What statement do you think he is making about the way The Circle defines the self. Is that different from the way we are viewed in real life by others, by ourselves, by corporations, by our friends and families?
2. What is the real-life definition of Sea Change? What huge transformation that affects a whole society will be effected, caused by the SeeChange cameras? Is this a metamorphosis? What change is The Circle causing in people's lives? Bailey brings out the most positive things, but by the end of The Circle, we see that there are some huge problems? What profound transformation happens with the introduction of these small cameras?
3. What is the irony of calling the Circle's perfect democracy demoxie?
4. What does Annie find out her pasts before her past and what is the irony of the name past perfect?
5. Look at the definition of plankton: Who or what are the plankton in the book? Remember Annie's plankton inspection meeting?
6. Shark: Look up the description of Stenton when Annie takes Mae around The Circle for the first time (23-24).
Now compare with the description of the shark in the tank at the beginning of Book II. Notice any similarities?
7. Octopus: The octopus is described two pages later, (311). Who do you think might the octopus be representing in the book? Why?
8. Seahorse: Look at the description of the seahorse (315-316). Who most clearly seems to represent the seahorse?
Why do you think so?
