An electro-optic amplitude modulator is built using a liquid crystal device, a quarter-wave plate and a polarizer. If it is desired to implement modulation of a laser source such that the transmission factor would change between 10% and 90% in a square-wave fashion with a frequency of 1kHz. Sketch the waveform of the voltage signal V that needs to be applied to the liquid crystal modulator if V?=5V. Make sure to mark significant points in your figure (amplitude, offset, time, etc.). How could a device be modified to work as an electro-optic phase modulator? If we apply signal V, what is the range of phase shifts induced by this modulator.
