Marking of the Essay
To what extent can functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) be used to understand consciousness?
The task instructions, as indicated in the Subject Learning Guide, denote several key points that should be addressed in the essay. It is important you address each one of them as they will each be evaluated according to the quality of your inquiry and critical evaluation.
- Define consciousness. It will be important for you to convey to the reader how you define consciousness for the purposes of this essay. To obtain high marks, your definition will need to be explicitly stated in a manner that is thoughtful and does not simply paraphrase somebody else's definition.
- Introduce the subject, state the essay question, and take a position . This is a position paper. Your topic needs to be introduced properly and there should be no ambiguity as to what your position is. To obtain high marks, the subject matter needs to be introduced in a manner that leads harmoniously towards the rest of your essay.
- Demonstrate an understanding of fMRI. A section of your essay should be devoted to explaining the methodology and covering its strengths and limitations. You will be assessed according to how well you understand and present the methodology as well as its strengths and limitations.
- Review some studies (including aims, key experimental manipulations, and key findings) that examine brain activation during different levels of consciousness using your selected approach. You will be graded on how well you understand these studies and how well you used them in support (or against) of your position. Each of the studies' aims, key experimental manipulations, and key findings should be stated. One should also consider how each of the studies advance our understanding of consciousness and whether they allow one to infer causation.
- Conclude with a paragraph reaffirming your position and summarising the key points in your essay . A good essay does not end with a whimper. For high marks, one should end the essay strongly by reaffirming their position, summarising the key points, and highlighting the implications of what was discussed.
What is the quality of the writing style and organisation? You will be rewarded if your essay is easy to understand, logically structured, the grammar is appropriate, and you have paid attention to details. You will be penalised if your marker has to struggle to understand your essay, there is little to no structure, the grammar is inappropriate, there are spelling mistakes, and you were sloppy. It is highly advisable that you write multiple drafts and have your friends, peers, or family members help you identify passages that are not clear and provide you with constructive suggestions on how to make your essay clearer and stronger. You will also be marked on stylistic expectations as outlined in Department of Psychology and Counselling Undergraduate Handbook (e.g., inclusion of a title page, conforming to APA formatting, etc).
