Examine the American Cancer Society, MTV, & the American Chemical Society websites. Compose a well-organized, well-supported rhetorical analysis of the three sites. Consider the following in your analysis:
Who is the intended audience? What might we say about them? (Be specific) Why might they be accessing the site? Support your statements. (How did you come to your conclusions? What specifically from the site supports your conclusion about who the intended audience is? Your analysis will not receive full credit without support for your statements.)
How did the authors of the websites shape information for the specific audience? (text, layout, visuals, color, etc.) In other words, how is the site designed for the specific audience? For example, if the intended audience is younger children, designers might use larger font size and colorful, cartoon graphics (perhaps). Be specific.
What is the purpose of the website? What kind of information is offered? What is the expected use of application of the site? (What will the readers do with the information?).
Is there information the site chose NOT to include? How conscious do you think that exclusion was? Relate this idea to your analysis overall.
Tips for being successful in this assignment:
Include a precise (reader-friendly) title that clarifies the specific purpose of your document ("Website Analysis" is NOT a precise title)
Don't answer the questions one by one; rather, use them to develop a cohesive document.
Remember that analysis is NOT summary (don't tell what you see; rather, provide an analysis of how the designers of the site address the specific audience and fulfill the purpose by using graphics, text, language, color, etc.).
Use Headings and other design features to organize ideas. Make the document reader-friendly (a reader should be able to see your main and sub-ideas quickly without having to read through your entire document). Use complete sentences, even in bulleted lists, to make your ideas clear for your reader. (Use a consistent, logical organization/design in your document to present your analysis.)
