Critical reviews are systematic. They begin at the title and review each section until the reference list at the end. It will be useful for students to ask themselves the following questions. These questions are to get you thinking about the critique, but it is not mandatory to answer all of them:
• What is the purpose and component of the article? Does it achieve this purpose?
• Does the title clearly and concisely describe what the article is about?
• Are the keywords informative and relevant?
• Does the abstract explain the purpose of the paper? Does it explain why the research was carried out and what conclusions were reached?
• Does the introduction help develop the background for the study?
• Does the introduction give a firm sense of what was done in the study?
• Does the introduction state the purpose and rationale for the study?
• Does the literature review broad, yet focused (think upside down triangle)?
• Does the literature review fairly represent opposing views?
