Statistics Assessment

In this assignment you will need a) to answer some general questions about quantitative data analysis and b) to answer some questions using data taken from the 2008 British Social Attitudes Survey.

All questions must be answered.

1. The following questions are about measurement

a) List the different levels a variable may take and describe the properties of the levels.

b) List the level of measurement that has been used for each of the variables in the dataset (other than the serial number)? Do not use the level of measurement in the data file. They have all been set to scale.

c) How do variables' levels of measurement affect statistical analyses?

2. You are required to report some descriptive statistics. Report your findings using any charts or tables you think are appropriate.

a) Report two measures of dispersion and two measures of central tendency of respondents' feelings toward Jewish people as measured on a 1-100 Scale?

b) What percentage of the sample strongly approve of same-sex couples adopting children?(report valid percent)

3. The following questions are about the number of children people living in respondents' households.

a) What is the largest number of children living in a respondent's household?

b) Recode your data into the following categories: 0 children, 1-2 children, 3-4 children and five or more children. Display the proportions in each category using appropriate tables and charts.

c) What percentage of respondents who have no children living in their household strongly disagree that schools should teach children to obey authority?

4.The following question is about how long people have been living in their area.

a) Report the confidence interval of the mean number of years respondents have lived in the same area. Please give an interpretation of your results.

b) Is the mean number of years respondents lived in the same area significantly different from 20? What test did you use?

5. The following questions are about hypothesis testing and statistical significance.

a) What are test statistics and what role do they play in determining statistical significance?

b) In your own words, give definitions of p and alpha values?

6.The following questions are about behavioural and attitudinal differences between members of the sample. For each question you must select the appropriate test of significance and report relevant SPSS output.

a) Is respondents' religious affiliation independent of their agreement with the idea that for some crimes the death penalty is appropriate? Which test did you use and was it statistically significant?

b) Respondents of which sex report a greater mean number of times they have had friends to their home in the past 12 months? Which test did you use and was it statistically significant?

c) Describe the association betweenthe number of employees respondents supervise and their life satisfaction rating? Which test did you use and was it statistically significant?

d) Does the mean estimate of the number of workers out of every 100 who earns more than £40,000 per year differ across classes? Are the differences statistically significant? Please report which statistical test you used.

7. The following questions are about modelling the relationship between the number of hour respondents watch TV at the weekend, and their age.

a)What is the correlation between the two variables? Interpret your findings.

b) What is the magnitude of change in the expected number of hours spent watching TV at the weekend associated with a year's change in respondents' ages? What test did you use and is the result statistically significant?

c) Choose a graph to show relationship between the two variables.

b) What is the proportionate reduction in error in predicting the number of hours spent watching TV at the weekend attained by modelling them as a function of age?
