Problem: Littorina are a species of intertidal snail (they live between the high tide and low tide line). Global warming threatens intertidal populations, especially on hot days due to heat stress. In Delaware, there is a 35% probability that snails will die at a temperature of 40 degrees Celcius. Here in Massachusetts, where the weather and water is cooler than in Delaware, your co-op advisor asks you to test if the proportion of snails that die due to heat stress at 40 degrees is less that that observed in Delaware. You perform an experiment on 30 snails, and observe that 8 of them died in the experiment.

Required:

Question 1: What is the proportion of snails that died in your experiment?

Question 2: Is the proportion of snails that died in your experiment different from the probability observed in Delaware? First explain what kind of test this is, define what you will analyze as a success, and list your null and alternative hypotheses.

Question 3: Calculate the P-value. Be sure to write the equation that you use and what you set each parameter in the equation equal to. (Note: round each calculation to 3 significant digits)
