You will need to learn how to communicate the importance of your ideas to your team and to divisional leadership. And, you will also need to positively support the budget-making process. I know this sounds like a lot, but all of these skills will be important to you as you continue to develop into the financial leader you were meant to be. Budget decision-making processes are often difficult and stressful. Entities within the institution are all vying for limited resources. You are also competing with your student affairs colleagues for the same dollars. The best advice I can give is to know your divisional budget and start preparing for it as soon as possible. Start with a well-written and strongly supported budget proposal. Budget request proposals are usually based on the divisional strategic plan and priorities.

You must know the answers to the following questions to be successful:

How does your department's goals align with the division's priorities? Who makes the budget decisions? What is the process for submitting budget proposals? What is the criteria for budget decisions? Where is the data to support your request?

The next step is to get support for your request from your supervisor and other relevant constituencies.

This step requires gathering input on and to your proposal from key stakeholders. Who is affected by this request?
