A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (February 20, 2008), found that patients who go into cardiac arrest while in the hospital are more likely to die if it happens after 11 pm. The study investigated cardiac arrests that occurred during the normal shift and found that 13,011 survived to leave the hospital and 46,989 did not. The study also examined cardiac arrests occurred during the shift that began at 11 pm, commonly referred to as the graveyard shift. Of those, 4,489 survived for discharge and 24,011 did not. The following contingency table summarizes the results of the study.
Survived for Discharge Did not Survive for Discharge Normal Shift 13,011 46,989
Graveyard Shift 4,489 24,011
1. What is the probability that a randomly selected patient experienced cardiac arrest during the graveyard shift?
2. What is the probability that a randomly selected cardiac arrest patient survived for discharge?
3. Given that a randomly selected patient experienced cardiac arrest during the graveyard shift, what is the probability the patient survived for discharge?
4. Given that a randomly selected patient survived for discharge, what is the probability the
patient experienced cardiac arrest during the normal shift?
5. Are the events "Survived for Discharge" and "Graveyard Shift" independent? Explain using probabilities.
