I have to complete hw 3 for QMB 6503. I see the hw documents but I do not understand how to compute my calculations on excel without using a calculator.
hw 3 tab 2
An examination of 1,000 cellular phone calls made from company phones at the offices of Kant, Taekitini, Moore, LLC reveals that the length of these calls is normally distributed, with m = 240 seconds and s = 40 seconds.
Q-2a: What is the probability that a call from one of these phones will last less than 180 seconds? (Round up to three decimals.)
P(X < 180) = P[z < (180-240)/40] = P(z < -1.5)
P(z < -1.5) = 0.0668 (Round to 0.067)
6.7% calls will be shorter than 180 seconds or 3 minutes.
Q-2b: What is the probability that a call lasted between 180 and 300 seconds? (Round Up to three decimals.)
P(180 < X < 300) = P[(180-240)/40 < z < (300-240)/40] = P(-1.5 < z < 1.5)
P(-1.5 < z < 1.5) = 0.8664 (Round to 0.866)
86.6% of all calls will have a duration of 3 minutes to 5 minutes.
Q-2c: What is the length of a call if only 1% of all calls are shorter? (Round up to one decimal.)
P(Z < z) = 0.01
P(Z < -2.326) = 0.01
240 + (-2.326)(40) = 146.96 seconds (Round to 147.0)
99% of all calls will be longer than 147 seconds.
