During strenuous exercise skeletal muscles within mammalian systems can be deprived of oxygen. This condition will cause glucose consumption to increase as well as lactate production. What is the primary purpose of lactate production within these cells? The best answer will address what happens to the rate of the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation under these conditions as well as the metabolite needs of glycolysis.
