Maria, currently 28 years old, was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) when she was 15. She already has two children but now that she is a busy mother, she has had great difficulty finding time to exercise and eat well, and as a result she hasn't lost the 20 pounds she gained with her last pregnancy. Maria and her husband have been wanting to have another baby, but she wants to "get back on track" with her health first. Her physician has referred her to a registered dietitian for recommendations to help her meet her goal of weight loss. Maria's current height and weight are 5'2" and 167 pounds. She reports her current meal pattern includes two small meals per day and other than "chasing my children" she gets no regular physical activity. Maria tries very hard to limit sweets, but admits to breaking down and eating an entire bag of chocolates at least once a week. Her physician prescribed metformin for her, but she doesn't understand why she should take this medication if she doesn't have diabetes. Don't need explanations just answer the questions thoroughly.
