A university demonstrated the use of satellite image maps for estimating urban population. A portion of a city was partitioned into n=128 census block groups, and satellite imagery was obtained. For each census block, the following variables were measured: proportion of block with low-density residential areas (x1), and proportion of block with high-density residential areas (x2). The first-order model to predict population density (y), shown below, was fitted to the data.

and

R2 = 0.686

What is the practical interpretation of β1?

For every? 1-unit increase in proportion of a block with? low-density areas, the population density is estimated to increase by 2.003 units.

For every? 1-unit increase in proportion of a block with? high-density areas, the population density is estimated to increase by 2.003 units.

For every? 1-unit increase in proportion of a block with? high-density areas, the population density is estimated to increase by 5.003 units.

A practical interpretation cannot be determined.
