Assignment:

A cell surface receptor needs to dimerize in order to signal (M+M ↔ 2M). Dimerization is mediated by a double-headed ligand, such as indicated below.

a) If dimerization is governed by an equilibrium constant of 1000, what is the population of dimer in the absence of any ligand? For this question, assume a free concentration of M of 100 μM (technically, concentration isn't the right term for membrane-bound receptors, but the
concept is fine for us).

b) With the values above, if the ligand binds the dimer with an affinity (KD) of 1 μM, what concentration of free ligand is required to get the population of dimeric receptor above 50%? Make a simplifying assumption here that ligand binds the monomeric surface receptor too weakly to make a difference, so ignore that species.
