Assignment:
1) Find any two poems (ie, short poems) written before 1650 in any language(s) that interest you or speak to you. I encourage you to explore poetry in languages that you or your family or ancestors or community speaks or spoke, or which otherwise means something to you personally. Poems may be as short as you like; there may be a great deal to say about just four lines. You're also welcome to select a short passage from a longer work for focused analysis.
2) Analyze both poems by answering the following questions. You may structure your answer as either paragraphs or bullet points. Either way, please write in full, well-formed sentences.
A) Form
1. What meter is the poem in, if any (in its original language)?
2. What is the poem's rhyme scheme, if any? (Indicate rhyme scheme as, for example, "ABAB CDCD," "ABBA ABBA," etc.)
3. Is the poem divided into stanzas? If so, how are these structured?
4. Is the poem written in a recognizable poetic form, such as a sonnet or a villanelle? Haiku? Ghazal? Pantun? Ruba'i? Ballad? Acrostic? Alliterative verse? Free verse?
- Please note: Forms will vary from language to language. If you're working outside of English, you may need to some very basic research to find out what formal characteristics pertain to your poem. No need to become an expert-just do your best!
B) Style:
- How would you describe the tone, mood, or atmosphere of the poem (give at least three descriptors)
- What modes of expression or persuasion does the poem use to communicate with its readers? Does it argue? Insult? Insinuate? Reflect?
- Declare? Muse? Wonder? Celebrate? Satirize? Lament? Praise?
- What senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) does the poem appeal to?
- Does the poem use imagery? Symbols? Metaphors?
