Recently, biological organisms have been discovered living at great depths at the bottom of the ocean. The properties of common substances are greatly altered there because of enormous hydrostatic pressures caused by the weight of the ocean lying above. The organisms need to equilibrate their internal pressures with this eternal hydrostatic pressure to prevent being crushed.
a. Estimate the hydrostatic pressure (in bar) in the ocean at depth 2500m. Assume the density of sea water is 1025kg m-3. The hydrostatic pressure is given by pgh, where p is the density and h is the depth.
b. Except near sources of heat, such as vents and hot gases coming from Earth's mantle, the temperature is close to 4 oC. What is the percentage increase in density of liquid water under these conditions compared with that at the surface? The isothermal compressibility K of liquid water at 4 oC is 4.9458 x 10-10 Pa-1
c. Consider a balloon filled with oxygen O2 at 1 bar pressure and occupying a 10L volume at 293 K. Assuming ideal gas behavior, what would be its volume at a depth of 2500m under the ocean surface at 277K? What is the percentage increase in density of the O2?
A fast tortoise runs with a speed of 10.0 cm/s and a hare runs 20.0 times faster. They start a race together but the hare stops to rest for 2.00 minutes. What distance did the hare cover
Two litres of mixture in which there is 2/5 of water and the rest spirit is mixed with five litres of mixture in which there is 1/3 of water and the rest spirit. What is the ratio of water and spirit in the new mixture?
A cooking vessel on a slow burner contains 11.2 kg of water and an unknown mass of ice in equilibrium at 0°C at time t = 0. The temperature of the mixture is measured at various times, and the result is plotted. During the first 50.0 min, the mixt..

The figure below shows a three-particle system, with masses m1 = 2.5 kg, m2 = 4.0 kg, and m3 = 9.0 kg. (a) What are the coordinates of the center of mass?
In an advanced laboratory class a student performs the photoelectric experiment. Ultraviolet light is shone on a particular metal and the stopping potential is measured at the same time. What is Planck's constant based on this measurement
A person can be killed if a current as small as 50 mA passes near the heart. An electrician is working on a humid day with hands damp from perspiration. What potential difference between the two wires
A sound wave of velocity 330 m/s and wavelength 0.70 m is produced for 0.50 s. What is the frequency of the wave? How many complete waves are emitted in this time interval? After 0.50 s, how far is the front of the wave from the source of the sound?
A plan convex lens with radius of curvature R =3.4 m is in contact by a flat plate of glass. A light source and the observer's eye are both close to the normal, as shown in Figure 24.8a. The radius of the50th bright Newton's ring is found to be 9.1 m..
