Assignment:

California Desert

Basic background information to include

  1. What is the overall range of the ecosystem (i.e., is it located only in CA? Is it found all over the state? Where in the state is it found?)
  2. What are the distinct abiotic conditions that characterize this ecosystem and that have shaped theplant community? (This includes Temperature, Rainfall, Soil, Elevation or any important non living characteristics)
  3. Give examples of representative and/or endemic species for this ecosystem. Choose two plants that are observable at ESA. What are some specific adaptations of these species to the conditions givenin #2? What characteristics of these plants are common to plant species found in this ecosystem? Familiarity with specific plant characteristics that are typical of the species found in the ecosystem will help you to find pictures and point out examples as part of your presentation. These plant examples should be your focus, however you may additionally discuss animal taxa characteristic of this ecosystem if you

The ecosystems are being evaluated on the following two selection criteria

Criterion 1: This ecosystem exemplifies/demonstrates important concepts in ecology.

The California State Ecosystem should serve as a place where visitors can go to observe examples of and understand important concepts in ecology. Describe how your ecosystem exemplifies

the ecological concepts listed below (each group member should present one concept from the concept bank). You should 1) give a clear general definition of the concept and then 2) explain how your ecosystem provides a good example of that concept. Give a specific example. Feel free to also include other concepts you know very well and not listed in the concept bank that can be illustrated well in your ecosystem.

Criterion 2: Evaluate whether this ecosystem is unique/valuable/important for California by addressing the following:

  1. Does this ecosystem play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, preserving ecosystem functions, or hosting endangered species?
  2. Is the ecosystem currently threatened by global climate change, development, pollution, or other conservation concerns?
  3. Are there important human interactions with this ecosystem in terms of historic use, present interactions, or the potential effects of humans on the future of this ecosystem?
  4. (optional) Is this ecosystem a habitat for any of California's existing state symbols (e.g., the State Bird, State Flower, State Insect, )?

Be sure to address these criteria in your presentation. These are great arguments to use in favor of your ecosystem!
