Question

An infant presents with a fever and severe rash from which areas of skin are beginning to peel off. The physician first suspects child abuse since the child appears to be suffering from skin burns resulting in extensive blistering and exfoliation. However, a skin sample reveals abundant gram-positive cocci cells arranged in clusters which produce yellowish colonies that are beta-hemolytic when plated on sheep blood agar. The cells also test positive for catalase activity.

1. What condition/disease does the infant have?

2. What is the organism causing this condition in the infant?

3. What molecule/virulence factor produced by the pathogenic organism is causing the changes to the infant's skin?

4. What treatment would you recommend the infant receive for this condition/disease?
