Assignment:

You are going to apply what you've learned about conditioning to the world around you. To start, you will find two examples of classical conditioning and two examples of operant conditioning in ads featuring children (defined as humans younger than teenagers). Look for ads in which a child is selling something, buying something, or reacting to a product. Each ad must be promoting a different product.

Classical Conditioning Example 1:

1. Find an example of classical conditioning in the media (following the instructions above). In the space below, describe the ad as if your reader has not seen it. You may choose to include a link to the image or commercial, but this is not required.

2. What is the Neutral Stimulus? Why?

3. What is the Unconditioned Stimulus? Why?

4. What is the Unconditioned Response? Why?

5. What is the Conditioned Stimulus? Why?

6. What is the Conditioned Response? Why?

7. How might we counter condition the association created in the ad? Note: counterconditioning is not the same thing as extinction. Check your textbook if you aren't sure what these terms mean.

Classical Conditioning Example 2:

1. Find an example of classical conditioning in the media (following the instructions above). In the space below, describe the ad as if your reader has not seen it.

2. What is the Neutral Stimulus? Why?

3. What is the Unconditioned Stimulus? Why

4. What is the Unconditioned Response? Why?

5. What is the Conditioned Stimulus? Why?

6. What is the Conditioned Response? Why?

7. How might we countercondition the association created in the ad?

Operant Conditioning Example 1:

1. Find an example of operant conditioning in the media (following the instructions above). In the space below, describe the ad as if your reader has not seen it.

2. What type of consequence (positive or negative, reward or punishment) is given in the ad? Explain your choice.

3. What schedule (fixed or variable, ratio or interval) is used in the ad (or assumed to be used, if one is not explicitly stated)? Why? NOTE: continuous is NOT a schedule of reinforcement.

Operant Conditioning Example 2:
