Assignment:
Your text makes the point that literature can help you understand current events. A piece of literature does not even have to be written expressly for that purpose. Even ancient works, or pieces written in the past, can provide insight into current events (Schilb and Clifford 67).
Study Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" (Schilb and Clifford 65). Can you link it to any historical or current events that provide insight into how we view our neighbors or how we define being a neighbor?
Answer the following questions in the assessment feature. Make sure that each response is supported with lines from the poem.
Question 1
What is the persona's opinion concerning the wall? (A persona is the assumed character/speaker of the poem. It is NOT the author. Consider what your textbook states about Frost's opinion vs. the speaker's opinion.)
Question 2
What is the neighbor's opinion concerning the wall?
Question 3
Why does the persona begin the poem with this line, "Something there is that doesn't love a wall"? Why isn't "something" defined or named?
Question 4
Why is there emphasis on the struggle to maintain the wall? Note where the persona details the struggle.
Question 5
What does this struggle (either to maintain the wall or the failed attempt to agree on whether the wall is needed) say about the human condition? (We will talk more about the human condition in a future session. For now, think of the human condition as the struggle or tension that is a part of all aspects of humanity.) How does the tension between the persona and the neighbor reflect a historical event of your choosing?
