Question - On June 15, 2012, Rajat Gupta, former managing director of McKinsey & Company, a director of Goldman Sachs, Proctor & Gamble, and AMR, and a well-known philanthropist, was convicted under securities laws of four criminal felony counts of conspiracy and securities fraud. The allegations that he provided confidential information to a billionaire hedge fund trader and his later conviction shocked his colleagues, friends, and family. Many wondered how a man so widely admired and respected could have made such serious mistakes.

What qualities made Gupta succeed and become a leader throughout his career? Did you see any evidence up to his retirement from McKinsey of characteristics that might have led him to subsequently compromise his integrity?

What errors do you see Gupta making in the choices he made after stepping down as head of McKinsey?

What is the nature of the insider trading case against him? How compelling is the case? Why do you think he has not accepted his guilt?

How does someone in Gupta's position make decisions that compromised his reputation and integrity? Have you experienced colleagues you admire who have made errors of judgment?
