Assignment: The purpose of my research is to explore the role and competence of midwives in delivering mental healthcare to their patients. The Research questions that I will ask is a) what is the nature of the evidence relevant to the provision of mental health interventions by midwives? b) are the psychosocial and educational training provided to midwives improving in the delivery of counselling and psychological interventions by midwives? Perinatal mental health problems are linked to poor outcomes for mothers, babies and families. Being aware of this issue and addressing it has call into question on whether or not midwives are fully prepared to handle mental health issues amongst their patients. Women often do not receive the care they need and fall between the gap of maternity and mental health services. My hypothesis is that if midwives receive appropriate training and support this would lead to better midwife-led counselling interventions to be effective. The independent variables for my research are PubMed, Maternity and Infant Care and Medline.
Quantitative data will be collected via Studies relevant to the role of midwives in the management and treatment of perinatal mental health issues as well as studies about knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, competence and training needs. Studies that include midwives as a participant group or assess care provided by midwives.
