When the snail Helix albolabris crawls along a wooden surface such as log, it will withdraw into its shell when the log is jostled. After a short time, if there is no further jostling, the snail will continue along its path until the next time it senses movement in the log. However, researchers have found that if they repeatedly tap on a log at regular intervals, the snail will spend less time in its shell at each tap, and eventually it will stop retreating into its shell at all.
