Jian, a 52-year-old Chinese American man, has been in counseling with you at your internship site for the past 13 weeks. He describes himself as a successful dentist with a thriving practice who has recently been displaced because of a large-scale flood. He mentions that his house has been destroyed and all of his possessions were lost. He states that he is from Texas and has no family in the area. He has no family of his own and recently had a divorce with his wife of 15 years. His initial concerns include flight of thoughts, heart palpitations, feeling that "everyone is out to get him," and insomnia. These symptoms have been occurring for approximately three weeks. In today's session, Jian demonstrated a flat affect, and mentioned that he had another night of little sleep. He said, "I feel like it is me against the world." He mentions that his work is starting to suffer and he has made a few dentistry errors due to his exhaustion and preoccupied thoughts.
