GLT 3006 English for Academic Purposes& Study Skills

Aim
1. To equip students with sufficient knowledge of Academic English to undertake university study.
2. To improve students' skills and competence in listening to, reading, writing, and speaking using Academic English.
3. To prepare students for the rigours of UK university life and academic practices.

Learning Outcome 1: Manage themselves as students in a UK university;
Learning Outcome 2: Prepare for lectures, conferences and seminars in a variety of styles;
Learning Outcome 3: Take notes and write them up accurately;
Learning Outcome 4: Analyse texts to infer a writer's point of view or bias;
Learning Outcome 5: Plan, research and write an academic body of text;
Learning Outcome 6: Use quotation, paraphrase and summary to support their work;
Learning Outcome 7: Explain the meaning and ramifications of plagiarism;
Learning Outcome 8: Orally present an academic body of work of their own writing;
Learning Outcome 9: Reflect upon their experience of the research process and issues they encounter.

Assessment Task

This assignment is in relation with reading an article and listening to a podcast. Each student is tasked to read an article or a passage of 800-1000 words. You also have to listen to an 8-10-minutes podcast. You need to analyse and understand the text and audio and take notes to write the summary. The summary should include;

1. Introduction

Write a short introduction about the reading text and audio you listen to.

2. Body paragraph

State the main idea of the text and audio and explain the important points.

3. Conclusion
Summarise the main idea and the underlying meaning of the article and the audio.

In addition to the summary, the students have to answer the given questions related to topic of the reading passage and the audio.
Guidelines for writing the assignment
- You will write the summary in an organised manner on what you will read and listen to.
You need to refer to various sources to answer the questions related to topics of the reading passage and the audio and provide in-text citation and references for the same.
- The number of words allowed is mentioned for each task.
- Use Arial as a font style with 12 as font size.
- Provide the list of sources you used at the last page of your assignment with proper label ‘References'.
- All referencing must be in Harvard Referencing Style.

Section A.

Assessment - Presentation

Assessment Task

Prepare a seminar-type presentation where students will be given the chance to speak, explain and discuss. Each student chooses a topic from the list below to be approved by the tutor. The talk should be delivered within 5-6 minutes.

The talk will mainly contain the objective of the topic, presentation of the concept and recommendation for students to enhance their presentation skills. The individual presentation must be Video recorded by the students through Microsoft teams and sent to the tutor by email with their ID. No. as the file name. Students who do not wish to video record the presentation will have to present live through Microsoft Teams which will not be recorded. The students will also prepare PowerPoint slides to show evidence of the use of paraphrase, quotation and summary skills. The PowerPoint slides need to be sent to the tutors by email. Provide the reference in the last slide using the Harvard referencing style.
