The medical order is for 5mg of morphine, a narcotic substance. The ampoule contains 10mg of morphine. What is the most correct action by the nurse? Draw up two syringes, each containing 5mg of morphine. Administer one to the patient and place the extra one in the drawer for later. Call the physician to change the order. Explain that the required amount of medication is not available. Give 10mg of morphine to the patient and carefully discard the vial in a sharps container. Give 5mg of morphine and ask another nurse to witness disposal of the remaining morphine.
