Case Study: Ondansetron 4 mg IV pre-op for prophylaxis prevention of nausea and vomiting (vial comes 2 mg/mL)

Patient has a history of excessive nausea and vomiting with general anesthetic and is on call to OR for splenectomy. They have called for the patient to the OR and asked this be given in the time before the porters come to take her.

Questions: For each of the above orders work through these questions:

  • Is this dose safe for this patient?
  • How much reconstituted solution should be drawn up and added to the mini-bag?
  • What is the most appropriate size mini-bag to use for this patient?
  • What is the final concentration of medication per mL of IV fluid once reconstituted in the mini-bag?
  • Based on the monograph and this particular patient, what is the most appropriate time period to administer this medication?
  • How many mL/hr should the pump run at?
