Study #1: Dr. Sanchez hypothesizes that people will be more likely to exercise if they better understand the benefits of physical activity. To test her hypothesis, she splits her subjects into two groups. The first group attends an hour long seminar about how exercise can affect a person physically and mentally. The second group attends an hour long seminar about how to make blueberry muffins. Knowledge of the benefits of physical activity is measured before and after each seminar and engagement in physical activity is measured before the seminar and two weeks and six weeks following the seminar. The results of the study showed that the people in first group (who received information about physical activity) showed an improvement in their knowledge of the benefits of physical activity and were significantly more likely than the other group to be physically active 6 weeks later. However, this effect was more pronounced in people who had a higher socioeconomic status. In other words, among people in the first group, those of higher SES were significantly MORE likely to be active than people of a lower SES.
