Assignment:

A plant is being converted from BOD removal to nitrogen removal. The update will include a large aeration basin expansion to allow nitrification. For denitrificaiton, the system will be converted to MLE, with a large anoxic basin ahead of the aerated zone, and an IMLR pumping system. We're going to determine the size of the anoxic basin, the IMLR pumping requirement, the oxygen recovery, and the alkalinity recovery.

Using the empirical approach, we determine the SDNR to be 0.200 g NO3N / g VSS-d. The influent flow rate is 10 mgd, and the influent NO3-N concentration is zero. The influent NH3N concentration is 50 mg/L. Assume full nitrification in the aerobic portion of the system, and ignore N used for biomass growth.
