Question 1. Microwave link design:
Part 1
A PtP terrestrial microwave link has the following parameters:
• Frequency = 928 MHz
• Path length (distance) = 9 km
• K=1.33
• Site A terrain height = 300m AMSL
• Site B terrain height = 400m AMSL
Significant terrain is as follows:
• 2 km from site A: 305m AMSL
• 3 km from site A: 330m AMSL
• 6 km from site A: 365m AMSL
• 8 km from site A: 390m AMSL
What is the minimum antenna heights AGL (to the nearest metre)? The antenna heights must be identical.
Question 2.
Microwave link design with Prop4Vp: Part 2
For the radio path in Question 25, select the appropriate components from the supplied data sheetsfor the MaxStream ‘9XStream-PKG-R' modem. The link needs to achieve 99% availability (or better) at 9600 bps. See here for fade margins vs. availability.
a) What antennas will you use (type and gain)? Select appropriate antennas for both sites from the data sheet.
b) What is your feeder loss (including connectors) per side? See note on cable type. Show your calculations.
c) What is your RSL (Receiver Sensitivity Level)?
d) What is your required Fade Margin?
e) What is your required RSS (Received Signal Strength)?
f) What is your expected RSS as per the Prop4Vp spreadsheet?
g) What is your EIRP?
h) Snag the completed spreadsheet (columns A-Q x rows 8-39) and paste it below (after entering your name in row 12).
Note: This question is mandatory. It must be answered and you are expected to get at least 80% (16/20) to be assessed as competent with a score for this module.
• Calculate the link budget with the Prop-4Vp spreadsheet
• Consult the Maxstream datasheet for the required radio parameters and antennas
• Use LMR-195cable as suggested by Maxstream
• Total connector loss is estimated at 1.0 dB for each site. Add this to the coax loss to obtain total feeder loss
• Assume that the radio is housed in an enclosure at the base of the mast, therefore feeder length equals antenna height AGL
Antenna height calculations
Enter the following:
• Your initials in H12
• Frequency in L11 (MHz, not GHz)
• Path distance (length) in Q11 (km)
• Keff in Q12
• Terrain height at mast sites P15, P16 (m AMSL))
• Obstructing terrain in rows 19, 20
• Antenna heights (iterative) in L15, L16 (m AGL)
E28 must show ‘unobstructed'
Link budget calculations
In addition, enter the following:
• Tx power in L12 (dBm, not mW)
• Antenna gains (dBi, iterative) in C15, C16
• Total feeder loss (dB, iterative) F15, F16
• Expected RSS in E35 must exceed the RSL by at least the Fade Margin
• For required fade Margin PLEASE follow the link in the question.
