Assignment:

For this assignment, you will be performing a rhetorical analysis of a speech or text. If you do not have a speech in mind, I encourage you to find one from either a TED Talk, a public address, or a piece of media. This should be a piece which ideally was over 10 minutes in length on video/audio, but exceptions can be made. In an essay of 3 to 5 pages, address the following rhetorical facets:

What is the message the speaker wants to convey? How did they convey it?
How does the speaker use the rhetorical triangle (ethos/logos/pathos + kairos)?
What is the rhetorical situation (rhetor/audience/occasion)?
If there is a visual component, which visual rhetorical techniques did the speaker use?
Who was the initial audience? What was their demographic breakdown and how did the speaker work with it?
What rhetorical devices did the speaker use?

There are very few limits to your choice of rhetorical address, but I ask you not to do the classic, overdone speeches (e.g. the Gettysburg Address, Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech, etc.). I want to see something at least a little nontraditional!
